Sens. John McCain and Lindsey O. Graham continued their war of words against Sen. Rand Paul on foreign policy Wednesday.
"Put it this way – Sen. Paul is the worst possible candidate of the twenty or so that are running on the most important issue which is national security," McCain (R-Ariz.) said on Fox News Channel's "Your World With Neil Cavuto."The record is very clear that he simply does not have an understanding about the needs and the threats of United States national security.”
Paul (R-Ky.) said Tuesday that Republican hawks are "lap dogs" for President Obama and his foreign policy.
The salvos between the men have been flying since last weekend, when Paul said that he is the only candidate willing to buck both Republicans and Democrats on foreign policy. McCain said Paul does not understand foreign policy; Paul said that his two colleagues have been wrong about foreign policy for decades.
Paul, whose foreign policy had long been less interventionist than many of his Republican colleagues, has tacked to the right while preparing for his presidential run. He put forward an amendment to increase defense spending that did not pass and has tried to cement national defense as a top priority, even giving a speech in front of an aircraft carrier in South Carolina.
Graham (R-S.C.), who is considering a run in 2016, told reporters Wednesday that Paul's foreign policy vision is "one step behind leading from behind."
On Fox, McCain said a colleague said that he and Graham are dogs -- Doberman Pinschers.
When asked about being called a lap dog by Politico, McCain mimicked a dog barking.
