Srinagar: Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Monday said the chief minister of a state should be trusted to decide what is in the interest of his state, otherwise it was better to "dispense" the state governments and rule from the Centre directly.
He, however, said that that the decision to release separatist leader Masrat Alam was J&K Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed's ploy to ensure that the discourse was about anything but the BJP-PDP alliance.
"God knows I hold no brief for Mufti Sayeed but a CM has to be trusted to decide what is & isn't in the interest of his/her state.
"And if you can't trust a CM to decide what is right then it's better to dispense with state governments & govern from Delhi directly," Omar posted on Twitter.
The National Conference working president was apparently referring to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi's statement in Parliament where he said the Centre was neither consulted nor informed about the release of Alam.
Omar said Sayeed did not want the discourse in the state to be about PDP's alliance with BJP and the chief minister had succeeded in the plan due to the uproar over Alam's release.
"Mufti wants the discourse to be about anything but his alliance with BJP, his hugs with NaMo (Narendra Modi) & the hollow CMP (Common Minimum Program) & so far his script is working," he said.
Meanwhile, National Conference hit out at Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed's over the entry of VHP President Praveen Togadia in the state after a four-year ban.
"Togadia was allowed entry into the state to spew venom at a time when he has been banned from propagating communal bigotry in various Indian states like Assam, Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh and after a four-year ban on his entry into Jammu and Kashmir," NC spokesman Junaid Azim Mattu said in a statement in Srinagar.
He claimed the "unacceptable and dangerous tricks" by the Chief Minister are aimed at disrupting the communal harmony of the state in order to divert attention from the "hollow CMP between PDP and BJP which has seen enormous climb-downs in PDP's earlier stated positions on AFSPA and Article 370".
"The enaction of these antics of creating hype about issues which don't merit political manipulation and exploitation is part of a larger plan to divert attention away from the continued misery of the flood victims and the unimaginable compromises made by PDP in its stated position on various political issues like AFSPA and Article 370.
"The CMP between PDP and BJP clearly states that PDP has officially thrown its much touted 'Self Rule' document into the political dustbin of expediency and has given up its demand for the revocation of AFSPA.
"PDP also chose to not include the finalisation of the Flood Relief Package in the CMP. To divert attention from these drastic u-turns and compromises, PDP wants to resort to theatrics and diversionary tricks," Mattu said.
He said Omar-led previous government had ensured that "communal entities like Togadia, inimical to state's harmony and peace, were kept away from J&K and were not allowed to propagate hate in the state at any cost".
