GovBeat: Missouri auditor Tom Schweich dead of self-inflicted gunshot

Missouri Auditor Tom Schweich (R) has died after what police described as a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Schweich, 54, was taken to a St. Louis-area hospital on Thursday after what his office called a “medical situation” at his home, local media outlets reported. Later, his spokesman said he had passed away.

“It is with great sadness that I confirm the passing of Missouri State Auditor Tom Schweich today,” spokesman Spence Jackson said in an e-mail to reporters.

Schweich was elected to a second term as auditor in November. He announced in January he would run for governor. He is survived by his wife and two children.

“Tom was very smart, very capable, outstanding at his job, and a good friend. Our thoughts and prayers are with Kathy, their children, and the rest of Tom’s friends and family as they deal with this tragic loss,” Sen. Roy Blunt (R-Mo.) said in a statement.

The Missouri state House scheduled an afternoon prayer service for Schweich.
